Lake Lewisville

March 5, 2009: Arrowhead Park on Lake Lewisville is my #2 favorite place up here. It's really pretty on the lake, its easy to get to and its on a point in the lake, so there is a lot of action. Anyway, I had been playing around at the park pond in Corinth before heading back to the house and decided to stop over at the lake. I had been looking on Google Maps and seen that it might be possible to walk from the boat ramp area at Arrowhead Park, over to the Interstate 35-E bridge and the adjacent railroad bridge. Well, there is rip rap along the railroad embankment so unless I wanna risk that, there is not access to under the bridge from Arrowhead. But, I walked out a little ways onto some of the rip rap, past a lot of junk in the water. The wind was blowing very hard, and very cold from the south, and just for the hell of it, i decided to toss a lure out and just see. The wind play mean tricks on me, but I managed to get some pretty decent distance casts with the BlackMax and a Rapala XRAP-10 in Hot Steel, my lucky color for up here. I threw out about 8 or 9 times and as I was pulling it in, almost to the rocks I got hit. and HARD! I pulled it in and it kept pulling out line, the first time that I'd ever had anything pull on that particular reel. I pulled him up and out of the water and here's what I got. I'm not exactly sure what kind of bass it is and it's weird that it doesn't appear to have a spiny dorsal fin, only a soft dorsal fin further down his back. Its wasn't folded down or anything, it just wasn't there. Then again, this is Lake Lewisville. I'm lucky it didn't have three eyes and shoot poison darts from its tail. It's kinda funny how everyone says LL is great for catfish and there are hardly any bass in it, but of the 4 times I've been out there, I've caught 3 LMB and a carp. Funny.

Forest Lake 2

February 13, 2009: Back at Forest Lake in Denton. This time, I walked the rest of the trail, all the way to the other side of the lake. I found a rocky outcropping that the trail opened up onto and fished there for a few minutes. There were two guys in a pickup truck on the other side of the lake (which is weird because the northwest corner of the lake is a retirement home and there are no cars allowed over there. Anyway I watched those guys and they pulled in a few good sized fish, so after they left I headed on over to their spot. I saw lots of swirls near the weeds so I got out the AbuMatic and a green and chartreuse Road Runner. After about 6 tosses, BAM! got one. Pulled out yet another small LMB. This one, like the one from the other day, was brown on top. I wonder if it's just from their environment or what that causes the color variations in these fish? But any now I'm 2 for 2 at forest Lake, so its my new favorite spot. Here are some pretty pictures of it!

Forest Lake

February 9, 2009: Forest Lake is a small lake fed by Hickory Creek in Denton. It is located right next to Wiggly Field, the dog park in Denton where Leslie and I take Callie all the time. The park side of the lake is completely wooded, and there are only a few places where the trails break through to the water. People take their dogs here all the time, and so the trails are well defined, but very grown over. I can only imagine it will get worse as it warms up and the vegetation begins to grow thick again. The bugs are for sure gonna suck, and so this place might be un-fishable come summertime. Anyway, the first time I went out to Forest Lake, I fished right over near the first place that the trail meets the lake. People often bring their dogs to this spot so they can go swimming. I got this little LMB after about and hour, and it was my first ever fish caught on a worm! Got him on a Watermelon and red Wave Tiki Stick. WOW! I'm buying stock in Wave Worms man. Go MOLPO! I caught him right in front of the weed beds, and he was all I got that day.

Lake LB Houston

January 13, 2009: Lake LB Houston is a publicly owned spill lake next to the Trinity River in Irving. It is literally across the street from Las Colinas, but also and complete world apart. I heard about it on the Texas Fishing Forum and one day, really bored and in need of something to do before school started, headed on down there. I fished at first near the parking lot where the mountain bike guys are and then headed down a little bit, onto a sand bar that sticks out to form a little island in the middle of the lake. I was wearing my rubber boots and boy did I need um. The bottom of the lake has a very shallows slope. It did not noticeably drop off from the island until very far out, much further than I could cast. So after about 30 minutes, I made my way further south along the shore, looking for a place to fish. I finally followed a small trail in the woods, to a muddy spot on the shore. There, surrounded by and old washing machine from the 1950s, several empty 40oz Malt Liquor bottles, and a bunch of empty Newport packs, I fished. I caught my first ever Crappie there, with a 1/8 oz Crappie Thunder with a green and chartreuse tail. On the AbuMatic. And that was all I caught that time. I was there for 5 hours, and got that one Crappie. But man it was fun.

Deep Eddy

January 2, 2009: So I convinced Dad to go to Eisenhower State Park on Lake Houston because they were stocking the pond at the park with Rainbow Trout. Never fished em before, never nuthin and plus I really wanted us to go fishing at least one more time during Christmas Break. So we got there and they TPWD fish truck hadn't showed up yet, so we went over and fished in Deep Eddy, which is a back-water tributary of the San Jacinto River, south of the Lake Houston Dam. We found a nice spot near the dam with some standing cypress trees in the water and fished there for a little bit. Dad got a small bass on his 3rd of 4th cast with a white Strike King fluke. I got skunked. We moved on to a spot further down river, and dad scored a pretty decent LMB, in some stumps with the same white fluke.
I got skunked there too. boy he sure looks really excited in those pictures doesn't he? After trudging through the woods on some crappy trails, we called it a day and headed back to the pond, where I tried to catch some trout. The water was incredibly clear, and you could very easily see the bottom and all the fish in it. We watched the small trout chase after my inline spinners a few times but nobody took. Dad got my line stuck in some trees and we both nearly fell in the water trying to untangle that mess. It was a great trip though and was really fun getting to go fish somewhere that was nearby and produced something.

Oops...

Ok so its been a very long absence. Sorry ya'll. Since the last time I posted, not much has happened in the fishing DWM world. Not much action during the summer of 2008, despite lots of trying to fish whenever I could get around to it. Then in August when the licenses expire, I just let it go. too busy, couldn't fish. So then in December I got new one, and started fishing again. The pictures I'll be posting in the next few posts are mostly cell phone camera shots, because it is just way too difficult and too much of a risk to bring my "real" camera along fishing. I don't want to risk losing $5,000 bucks worth of Canon EOS to a bass. But anyway these pictures have been accumulated since the last post. I'll be adding dates and locations and lures and all that good stuff. LATER!

Oh by the way: I GOT MY HAIR CUT! No more pony tail.
